Hotels near Avebury - Wiltshire

Hotels near Avebury are limited to nearby towns as the World Heritage site is in a remote part of the county.

Marlborough lies in the heart of Wiltshire and is the closest town to the Stone Circle. As Marlborough was one of the main stops on the old London to Bath coaching route there is a good selection of hotels, inns and pubs with rooms available both in and near the town. Mostly they are on the wide main route through the town.

The Castle and Ball has its origins on the site of an old 15th coaching inn. Today it has restaurant and bar facilities and a walled garden and terrace and rooms for the visitor.

Although it has no coaching inn origins The Ivy House has a rather unique history of its own. The building was originally constructed in 1707 as Marlborough Academy a school for boys. It is a fine example of a grade II listed Georgian building and today reflects its 300 year history but provides the modern luxuries that discerning guests expect.

There are a few hotels outside the town and Parklands Hotel is a favourite. There is a good choice of 12 bedrooms, four kingsize, two doubles, three twin and two singles. The hotel has a restaurant and offers personal service for all types of celebrations such as weddings and christenings. There are facilities for the business traveller and in its quiet position the hotel offers the perfect place for small conferences and business meetings.

The friendly and welcoming family run thatched village inn, The Horshoe Inn, is also very popular with both visitors and locals alike. The inn is a Free House with restaurant and rooms set in an acre of land in the village of Mildenhall close to the town of Marlborough with beautiful views over the Marlborough Downs.

In the other direction to find hotels near Avebury you will need to try the small Wiltshire town of Calne.

Not far from Calne in Hillmarton and opposite the village church is The Duke Hotel. Interestingly this is in fact a pub but it is believed that the Duke of Beaufort after whom it was named insisted that his name was not to be associated with a pub, hence the name. He need not have worried because today the pub not only offers excellent B&B; but a restaurant and spacious, modern rooms with all amenities. Avebury Circle is about 30-40 minutes away by road.

The historic Landsdowne Hotel is in Calne, a small Wiltshire town centre also within easy reach of the Stone Circle, and was originally a coaching inn built in the 16th century. A Grade II listed building it was also home to a local brewery for a time. The courtyard still has its medieval brewhouse. Today the hotel has 26 rooms, all ensuite, two bars, a bistro and two function rooms.
