See Salisbury for Free

See Salisbury for free if you’re planning a break. The city boasts a stunning medieval heart and one of UK’s most famous cathedrals as well as plenty to see and do for free.

Take an unguided tour - Salisbury lends itself to walking, and the best way to explore the city is by foot. Wander around the city’s medieval centre, exploring Cathedral Close and browsing the range of attractive boutique shops. If you fancy a slightly more extended ramble, then divert to the river path and walk to Old Sarum, the site of Salisbury’s earliest settlement.

Attend evensong - Salisbury Cathedral is well worth a look at any time of day; but if you time your visit to coincide with evensong then you will see this beautiful medieval building at its very best. The majestic architecture looks even more impressive by candlelight, and the cathedral choir is one of the best in the country.

See Stonehenge - This iconic landmark lies less than ten miles from Salisbury city centre and is a must-see for anybody with an interest in Britain’s ancient past. If you’re keen to see a similar archaeological site without the concentrated crowds that Stonehenge attracts, you could also plan a trip to nearby Woodhenge – a Neolithic site located approximately eight miles from the city.

Go bird watching - Salisbury is known as the ‘city in the countryside’, and many of its attractions are rural rather than urban. For a truly rural escape, visit Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Langford Lakes Nature Reserve and spend an afternoon spotting local flora and fauna. The site is home to dozens of bird species – so be sure to take your binoculars!

Visit Downton Moot - These eighteenth century gardens are the perfect place to relax, experience nature, and enjoy a picnic in the sunshine. Adjoining the River Avon, they are open to the public throughout the year – and if you book in advance, volunteers will even give you a guided tour of the site.

In addition to the city’s established attractions, there are also plenty on offer to see Salisbury for free with events that take place throughout the year. Visitors can see live music in the Queen Elizabeth Gardens from June to August, or take part in guided walks and visits round heritage sites in September. Finally, even for domestic trips, it’s worth taking out travel cover with a reputable provider such as Go Travel Insurance, who offer annual travel insurance that covers domestic travel.
