Further Details

Three islands have been created and the lakes’ shores planted with rushes, sedges and reeds to create safe habitats for breeding birds.

The lakes are now an ideal place for breeding and overwintering birds. The river habitat is much improved thanks to all the work that has been carried out at the reserve.

Mallard, gadwall, tufted duck and pochard are present all the year round. Overwintering birds include widgeon, teal and the occasional goosander. Birds such as waders, terns and osprey use the reserve on their migration to warmer climes. Over 150 bird species have been recorded at Langford Lakes in the last twenty years.

Visitors are urged to look out for the great crested grebes’ courtship rituals from February onwards when they rise out of the water shaking their beautifully adorned heads. You may also see the flash of vibrant blue and orange plumage of the kingfisher or the little egret as it comes to roost in the trees opposite the Robins Hide.

The River Wylye of which a half-mile stretch borders the reserve is and internationally important chalk stream and is home brown trout, grayling and a host of freshwater insects on which they feed. Otters and water vole regularly use the river and lakes.

During high summer the reserve is full of the sights and sounds of the cuckoo, warblers, a variety of woodland birds, butterflies, dragonflies and typical wetland species of the yellow flag iris and ragged robin coming into bloom.

Langford Lakes Nature Reserve near Salisbury and Warminster also offers fishing facilities. Day tickets are available for fly-fishing on the River Wylye for brown trout and grayling and coarse fishing on Brockbank Lake is open to members of the Langford lakes Fishing Club which is run by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.
