Apart from Longleat the area around the town is excellent for those who enjoy the outdoors with walking cycling and other outdoor pursuits. There are several Iron Age hillforts just outside the town, Battlesbury, Scratchbury and Cley Hill. The latter is managed by the National Trust, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and well worth visiting for the magnificent views across the area. It is occasionally used for paragliding.

Throughout the 1960’s and 70’s Warminster became the focus of UFO sightings in the UK or The Thing as it was referred to by the locals. The crop circles that appear every summer, despite being undermined by the confessions of those who claim to manufacture them by moonlight, are still as mysterious as ever as are video clips and descriptions of their complicated designs. Wiltshire has become synonymous with these strange creations and their links with UFOs, aliens and ancient monuments. If nothing else it does at least suspend disbelief in even the most cynical of us.

Warminster is quite large by Wiltshire town standards with a population of 18000. It lies at the head of the River Wylye valley. The town is of Saxon origin and believed to have been settled around 700 AD.

There are several hill forts in the immediate vicinity notably Scratchbury, Battlesbury and Cley Hill the latter being managed by the National Trust from which there are magnificent views.

Longleat House and Safari Park is of course one of the most well known visitor destinations in England and there is plenty of accommodation available around the whole area. It is set in 900 acres of grounds and is regarded as one of the best examples of Elizabethan architecture in the UK. The Marquess of Bath established the Safari Park in 1966 and it was a world first. There are over 500 animals in the collection today.

Stourhead House and Gardens, landscaped by Capability Brown is another Wiltshire attraction within easy reach of the town. The gardens with the lake as its centrepiece has a large collection of trees from all over the world which are renowned for their spectacular autumn colours.

Warminster garrison is the home to the 3rd Battalion of The Yorkshire Regiment, an armoured infantry unit using predominantly Warrior vehicles located in Battlesbury Barracks, which forms part of the Salisbury Plain Super Garrison.

Whether visiting friends or family, or on holiday there is a good choice of self catering in Warminster or in the surrounding countryside. The town makes an excellent base from which to explore the county of Wiltshire.
