Retaining some of the most interesting and historic networks of medieval streets in England this thriving Wiltshire town is a living history with over 500 preserved and listed buildings. The cobbled streets and courtyards are lined with small retailers and cafes.

There are weekly markets in the Shambles on Thursdays and a host of other events such as the very popular annual Devizes to Westminster Canoe race at Easter and the annual August Bank Holiday Devizes Carnival Week, ideal entertainment for the family with events being held all over the town culminating in the Carnival Parade.

There are many visitor family and historic attractions within this Wiltshire market town. The Kennet and Avon Canal passing the town at the Devizes Wharf makes the focus for a busy and interesting scene in the summer season.



A ten minute canal side walk westwards along the towpath takes you to the unique and spectacular flight of 29 locks at Caen Hill. You can walk or cycle the entire length of the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath in either direction.



The Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Silver Street is recognised as one of the finest of its type in the country. Also well worth visiting is the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust museum at Devizes Wharf and the Visitor Centre at Wadworths Brewery where Shire horses can be seen regularly leaving on their rounds around the town.

Choices of accommodation within the centre are mainly old established inns and hotels such as The Bear Hotel overlooking the busy market place at the heart of the town.



The Bear Hotel has been a prominent hostelry for many centuries and the first written record was a licence granted in 1559 but a hostelry existed on this site long before that.

Other accommodation in Devizes is to be found on the outskirts of the town and in the surrounding villages including self catering accommodation, holiday cottages camping and farmstay.
