Stonehenge is on an open hillside of Wiltshire on the edge of military ranges and Salisbury Plain and surrounded by open fields.

The stone circle is remote and stands on a very exposed hillside and you are well advised to wear warm protective clothing before venturing near the stones



The main population centre is the small country town of Amesbury although there are many small villages scattered along the river Avon which lies to the east of the monument but holiday accommodation is limited in those areas.



There are three hotels in Amesbury, the Antrobus Arms Hotel, the George Hotel and the Fairlawn. The new Holiday Inn is located on the local Solstice business park. There are other hotels such as The High Post inn on the Salisbury Road about 10 minutes drive south of Stonehenge as are the Redhouse hotel on the A303 and the Parkhouse Motel at Cholderton to the east.



The Fairlawn Hotel is a fine Georgian townhouse. A non-smoking hotel with atmosphere, the owners take great pride in providing a friendly and professional service. The Fairlawn Hotel is a grade II listed fine Georgian townhouse, conveniently situated in Amesbury centre just off the A303 which makes The Fairlawn as well as being close to Stonehenge is an ideal stopover for those travelling to the West Country, Devon and Cornwall.

There are several B&Bs; in the town. The Anchorage on the Salisbury Road was recently awarded the Enjoy England five-star gold award and is two miles from Stonehenge. The Anchorage is a friendly bed and breakfast where attention is paid to every detail and you can be sure of a warm welcome. Other B&Bs; include the three-star Catkin Lodge also close to the town centre amenities.



If its campsites you're looking for why not try the small Stonehenge Campsite about five miles from the Stones. Very definitely not you average campsite with friendly informal staff and perhaps some of the best hardstanding pitches in the area.
