From here you can see up into the spire through the medieval scaffold, and from the outside you can look over the city and surrounding countryside. There is a separate charge for a tower tour (£4.50 for Adults, £3.50 for Children & Seniors) which is in addition to the requested voluntary donation for those visiting the ground floor of the Cathedral and Chapter House. Scheduled tours run at least once a day for 11 months of the year (subject to daily conditions). Children must be at least 4ft (120cm) tall and 5 years old. Each child aged 5-10 must be individually accompanied by a responsible adult. For children 11-17 there must be at least one adult for every 5 children. Some of the stone spiral staircases date back to the 13th century and have no hand rails. Please take care while ascending and descending. The building itself is remarkable, a testimony to the faith and practical skills of those who erected it.But it is much more than an historical monument. It is the Cathedral Church of the Salisbury diocese and so the Mother Church of several hundred parishes in Wiltshire and Dorset. It is a centre of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Every day, week in week out, for century after century, God is worshipped here. Above all it is a place of prayer. Salisbury Cathedral and the Cathedral Close are visited by over 500,000 people a year. Many come as tourists, or to worship, while others attend some of the many events taking place here. The Cathedral is open to all and seeks to provide facilities for, and a warm welcome to our many visitors. What is special about Salisbury Cathedral? Britain's finest 13th Century Cathedral. Boy and girl choristers continue a tradition of worship that goes back nearly 750 years. There are volunteer guides on duty most days. They will be pleased to provide free guided tours of the cathedral and answer questions. Or to help you explore the cathedral at your own pace there are self-guiding leaflets available in English with supplements in other languages. Climb 332 steps in easy stages, by narrow spiral staircases and interior roof walkways, to reach the base of the Spire, 69m (225ft) above ground level. The Cathedral receives no subsidies or financial help from the Government or from the Diocese. To cover the £3.5m it costs to run the Cathedral each year, we ask visitors to make a suggested voluntary donation. Please note there is no charge for the tours of the cathedral floor provided by the guides. Salisbury Cathedral is situated in the centre of Salisbury, 90 miles south-west of London. There are frequent train services from London, Bath and the West Country. The nearest train station is Salisbury. National Express coaches have regular links to Salisbury Bus Station. Car parking: Please use city centre car parks. The closest being: Old George Mall or Crane Street. Park and ride facilities are now available on the approaches to Salisbury near Old Sarum (A345), Wilton (A30/A36) and Britford (A338).
