Description
On a site that where once Benedictine monks of Malmesbury Abbey lived and worked Barbara and Ian Pollard through determination and hard work have created an oasis of beauty and calm in the busy little Wiltshire town of Malmesbury.Abbey House Gardens are well known for the offbeat thinking of Ian and Barbara , the so-called ‘naked gardeners’. Refusing to be restrained by orthodox ideas about gardening and with sheer dedication the couple transformed the gardens from a few acres of rough land to the exuberant paradise we see today. And all in a mere ten years!
With over 10,000 different plants this is a ‘must see’ garden for ideas, yet a visit is calming and soothing. There is a special atmosphere, especially in the river gardens and probably the best flower display throughout the Seasons that you could find. One visitor recently remarked that, “This is a garden that gives you a hug from the moment you enter and which you leave, slowly, with a smile on your face.”
Described by Alan Titchmarsh as having the ‘wow factor in abundance’ this garden has as its backdrop the Abbey ruins next door. The upper part of Abbey House is formal, featuring a Celtic cross knot garden and a fantastic circular colonnade containing raised beds bursting with plants. In complete contrast the lower garden is a haven for wildlife being much more informal and full of specimen trees and plants.
